Larynx01:21

Larynx

6.2K
The human larynx, often referred to as the voice box, is an intricate organ located in the neck. It serves as a pathway for air to enter the lungs during respiration and is an essential component of voice production.
Anatomy of the Larynx
The larynx consists of various components, including cartilage, muscles, and vocal cords. Its structure includes three large unpaired cartilages—the thyroid, cricoid, and epiglottis—and three smaller paired cartilages—the arytenoids,...

Acute Pharyngitis01:30

Acute Pharyngitis

5.7K
Introduction
Acute pharyngitis is the inflammation of the back of the throat (pharynx), commonly resulting in a sore throat. It is a frequently encountered condition that prompts individuals to seek medical advice.
Classification
Acute pharyngitis can be categorized based on its underlying cause:

Chronic Pharyngitis01:23

Chronic Pharyngitis

14.8K
Chronic pharyngitis refers to persistent inflammation of the pharyngial mucosa.
Etiology
It often arises from persistent viral or bacterial infections affecting sinuses and tonsils.
Additional contributing factors include inadequate dental hygiene, mouth breathing, recurring tonsillitis, allergic rhinitis, laryngopharyngeal reflux, and exposure to smoke, chemicals, and other environmental pollutants. Allergic reactions to pollen, mold, and pet dander, chronic cough, excessive voice usage,...

Barrett Esophagus-II: Clinical Manifestations and Management

1.5K
Individuals with Barrett's esophagus are often asymptomatic, but they may experience symptoms commonly associated with GERD, such as heartburn and acid regurgitation. Additional symptoms can include difficulty swallowing, chest pain, unintentional weight loss, blood in the stool (which may appear black, tarry, or bloody), and episodes of vomiting.
To diagnose Barrett's esophagus, healthcare providers often recommend an endoscopy for those showing symptoms of acid reflux. The procedure...

Pneumonia I: Introduction01:30

Pneumonia I: Introduction

1.3K
Pneumonia is an acute respiratory infection that targets the lungs, specifically the alveoli. These tiny air sacs, essential for oxygen exchange, become engorged with pus and fluid, severely hindering breathing, decreasing oxygen absorption, and causing significant pain and discomfort during respiration.
Risk Factors
Various factors influence the likelihood of developing pneumonia. Age plays a crucial role, with infants, children under two, and individuals over 65 at increased risk due to their...

Rous Sarcoma Virus (RSV) and Cancer01:03

Rous Sarcoma Virus (RSV) and Cancer

6.6K
Rous Sarcoma virus or RSV was discovered by F. Peyton Rous in the year 1911 as a filterable transmissible agent that could cause tumors in chickens. He won a Nobel Prize for this discovery in 1966. His experiments clearly demonstrated that some cancers could be caused by infectious agents and led to the discovery of many more cancer-causing viruses in animals as well as humans.
RSV is a retrovirus that contains two copies of a plus-strand  RNA genome. Its genome consists of four main open...

Area of Science:

  • Mycology
  • Otolaryngology
  • Infectious Diseases

Background:

  • Focal laryngeal candidiasis is an uncommon clinical diagnosis.
  • It can arise secondary to pulmonary, pharyngeal, or esophageal candidiasis, or as part of disseminated fungal infections.
  • Inhaled corticosteroid use is a known risk factor, affecting 10-15% of users.

Observation:

  • A rare case of laryngeal candidiasis is presented in a 79-year-old immunocompromised male with a 17-month history of progressive hoarseness.
  • Video laryngoscopy revealed a white, vegetative mass on the right vocal cord, mimicking laryngeal carcinoma.
  • Histopathological examination confirmed Candida albicans infection with associated keratosis and necrotic epithelial cells.

Findings:

  • The study highlights a rare presentation of laryngeal candidiasis.
  • Histopathology confirmed Candida albicans as the causative agent.
  • The clinical presentation mimicked laryngeal carcinoma.

Implications:

  • Laryngeal candidiasis should be considered in the differential diagnosis of laryngeal symptoms in immunocompromised patients.
  • Prompt recognition and diagnosis are essential for appropriate management.
  • This case underscores the importance of considering opportunistic infections in immunocompromised hosts presenting with unusual symptoms.
