Regulation of Food Intake01:30

Regulation of Food Intake

3.1K
Short-term regulation of food intake primarily involves neural signals from the gastrointestinal (GI) tract, blood nutrient levels, and GI tract hormones. Communication between the gut and brain via vagal nerve fibers plays a significant role in evaluating the contents of the gut. Clinical studies have shown that protein ingestion produces a more prolonged response in these nerve fibers compared to an equivalent amount of glucose. Additionally, the activation of stretch receptors caused by GI...

Energy Balance01:19

Energy Balance

1.4K
The human body gets energy from the three macronutrients: carbohydrates, proteins, and fats. Energy is released when the chemical bonds in the organic compounds present in the food are broken down. The energy content of food is measured in kilocalories (kcal), defined as the amount of heat required to raise the temperature of one kilogram of water by one degree Celsius. This value is determined by measuring the temperature change of the water surrounding a calorimeter after the complete...

Area of Science:

  • Nutrition science
  • Mobile health technology
  • Behavioral science

Background:

  • Rising obesity and poor dietary habits necessitate evidence-based interventions.
  • Mobile phone cameras offer novel methods for dietary intake recording.
  • Visualizing food intake via photography may enhance awareness of consumption patterns.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the impact of cell phone picture-based food recording on energy intake and food choices in college students.
  • To assess the effectiveness and acceptability of this dietary self-monitoring technique.

Main Methods:

  • A repeated measures crossover design was employed.
  • Participants recorded food intake via memory recall and cell phone pictures over two 3-day periods.
  • Focus groups gathered qualitative feedback on the method's usability and perceived benefits.

Main Results:

  • Significantly higher intake of meat and vegetable servings was observed during the memory recall period compared to the cell phone picture period.
  • Focus group participants reported positive attitudes towards using cell phone pictures for diet recording.
  • An increased awareness of food selection and portion sizes was noted by participants.

Conclusions:

  • Cell phone picture-based diet recording presents a practical, relevant, and accessible approach for self-monitoring dietary habits.
  • Integrating this technique with nutrition education could further support dietary behavior change.
