Summary

A rare case of secondary penile cancer originating from pancreatic cancer was identified. Specific tissue staining markers aided in pinpointing the pancreatic origin of the penile tumor.

Area of Science:

  • Oncology
  • Pathology
  • Urology

Background:

  • Secondary penile carcinoma is uncommon, presenting diagnostic challenges.
  • Pancreatic cancer can metastasize to various organs, though penile involvement is rare.

Observation:

  • A patient presented with penile carcinoma, initially suspected as a primary penile tumor.
  • Diagnostic investigations revealed the penile tumor to be secondary to an undetected primary pancreatic malignancy.

Findings:

  • Immunoperoxidase staining for carbohydrate antigen 19-9 (CA 19-9), carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA), and prostate-specific antigen (PSA) was crucial.
  • These markers helped differentiate the penile tumor and identify its pancreatic origin.

Implications:

  • Highlights the importance of considering metastatic disease in penile cancer diagnoses.
  • Demonstrates the utility of specific immunohistochemical markers in determining the primary site of rare metastatic cancers.
  • Suggests a potential role for CA 19-9, CEA, and PSA in diagnosing pancreatic adenocarcinoma metastasis.
