Area of Science:

  • Neurology
  • Public Health
  • Cardiovascular Medicine

Background:

  • Stroke prevention relies heavily on managing risk factors.
  • Limited data exists on acute stroke patients' awareness of their personal risk factors.
  • This study aimed to evaluate stroke patients' knowledge of their own stroke risks.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess the level of informedness among acute stroke patients regarding their individual stroke risk factors.
  • To identify which stroke risk factors are best understood and which are least understood by patients.
  • To highlight areas for improvement in patient education for stroke prevention.

Main Methods:

  • Interviews were conducted with acute stroke and transient ischemic attack patients within 72 hours of hospitalization.
  • Data on stroke risk factors was collected from patient interviews and medical records.
  • The study included eligible patients admitted to Tartu University Hospital, Department of Neurology over a 9-month period.

Main Results:

  • Out of 341 admitted patients, 195 were interviewed.
  • Diabetes was the most recognized risk factor (89%), followed by hypertension (80%) and atrial fibrillation (78%).
  • Ischemic heart disease and/or heart failure was the least recognized risk factor (66%).

Conclusions:

  • Acute stroke patients possess the highest awareness of diabetes as a risk factor and the lowest awareness of ischemic heart disease/heart failure.
  • There is a significant need to improve patient understanding of all studied stroke risk factors.
  • Enhanced patient education on risks and treatment options is recommended for stroke patients and the general population.
