Summary

Occupational therapists (OTs) used a client-centred activities in daily living (CADL) intervention to foster agency in stroke survivors. Continuous sharing between OTs, clients, and teams enhanced client participation in daily activities.

Background:

Study evaluated the client-centred activities in daily living (CADL) intervention within a randomized controlled trial.
The CADL intervention aimed to enhance agency and participation in daily life for stroke survivors.

Purpose of the Study:

To qualitatively explore occupational therapists' (OTs) application of the CADL intervention.
To understand OTs' experiences and reflections on interacting with stroke clients during CADL.

Main Methods:

Longitudinal qualitative study involving six OTs over one year.
Data collected through interviews and observations across four separate occasions.
Grounded theory approach used for data analysis.

Main Results:

Sharing emerged as the core category, illustrating how OTs facilitated client agency.
OTs used sharing to build empathetic understanding of clients' lived experiences.
This process aimed to empower clients with ownership of their daily activities.

Conclusions:

Continuous sharing is crucial for progressively increasing client agency.
The sharing approach should involve the entire interprofessional team, clients, and significant others.
