Summary

Acute epinephrine infusion increases basal plasma renin activity and shifts the renin stimulus-response curve in dogs. Chronic infusion, however, does not cause lasting changes in these parameters.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the impact of acute and chronic epinephrine infusion on the relationship between plasma renin activity and renal arterial pressure.
  • To characterize the renin stimulus-response curve (RSRC) under varying epinephrine levels.

Main Methods:

  • Eight conscious, uninephrectomized dogs were studied.
  • Renal arterial pressure was reduced stepwise to determine the RSRC.
  • Plasma renin activity and epinephrine levels were measured during control, acute, and chronic epinephrine infusions.
