Summary

Visfatin levels were higher in patients experiencing active ulcerative colitis (UC) flares compared to those in remission or healthy controls. While visfatin shows potential as an inflammatory marker, its clinical utility for assessing UC activity requires further investigation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate serum visfatin levels in patients with active ulcerative colitis (UC) compared to remission and healthy controls.
  • To determine if visfatin levels correlate with disease activity in UC.
  • To assess the potential of visfatin as a biomarker for UC flares.

Main Methods:

  • A cohort study involving 31 UC patients (active and remission phases) and 29 healthy controls.
  • Serum visfatin levels were measured using ELISA.
  • Disease severity was assessed clinically using Trulove and Witt's criteria.

Main Results:

  • Serum visfatin levels were significantly higher in active UC patients (7.77 ± 2.41 ng/ml) compared to remission (6.18 ± 2.04 ng/ml) and controls (6.54 ± 2.20 ng/ml).
  • No significant difference in visfatin levels was observed between UC patients in remission and healthy controls.
  • A visfatin cut-off of 6.40 ng/ml demonstrated 72% sensitivity and 52% specificity for active UC.

Conclusions:

  • Elevated visfatin levels are associated with active ulcerative colitis (UC).
  • Visfatin's sensitivity and specificity are comparable to other inflammatory markers for UC activity.
  • Current findings do not strongly support visfatin assessment for routine UC activity evaluation.
