A novel bacterium, Paenibacillus cathormii sp. nov., was identified from tree bark in Thailand. This Gram-positive, endospore-forming bacterium expands the known diversity within the Paenibacillus genus.
Area of Science:
- Microbiology
- Bacterial Taxonomy
- Environmental Microbiology
Background:
- The genus Paenibacillus comprises diverse, Gram-positive, endospore-forming bacteria with significant ecological and biotechnological roles.
- Accurate taxonomic classification is crucial for understanding bacterial diversity and function in various environments.
Purpose of the Study:
- To taxonomically characterize a novel bacterial isolate from tree bark in Thailand.
- To determine the phylogenetic placement and distinct species status of the novel isolate within the Paenibacillus genus.
Main Methods:
- Polyphasic taxonomic analysis including 16S rRNA gene sequencing.
- Cell-wall peptidoglycan analysis for meso-diaminopimelic acid presence.
- Polar lipid profiling, menaquinone analysis, and cellular fatty acid composition determination.
- DNA G+C content determination.
Main Results:
- Strain BK114-2T, isolated from Thai tree bark, is a Gram-positive, facultatively anaerobic, rod-shaped, endospore-forming bacterium.
- 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis showed affiliation with the Paenibacillus genus, with highest similarity to P. timonensis (96.7%).
- Chemotaxonomic data (meso-diaminopimelic acid, MK-7, dominant fatty acids) and DNA G+C content (52.0 mol%) supported its distinct species status.
Conclusions:
- Strain BK114-2T represents a novel species within the Paenibacillus genus.
- The proposed name for this new species is Paenibacillus cathormii sp. nov.
- The type strain is BK114-2T (KCTC 33251T = TISTR 2282T).
