Cancer Prevention

8.7K
Several factors can increase the risk of cancer in an individual. About 50% of cancer cases can be prevented by adopting a healthy lifestyle, regular exercise, eating healthy, and following a modest cancer prevention diet. Epidemiological studies have consistently shown that populations with vegetable and fruit-rich diets have reduced the incidence of cancer. On the other hand, populations who have a diet rich in animal fat, red meat, junk food, or high calories are predisposed to cancer.

    Area of Science:

    • Phytochemistry
    • Natural Product Chemistry

    Context:

    • Selaginella uncinata is a plant species with potential medicinal properties.
    • Flavonoids are a diverse class of plant secondary metabolites with various biological activities.

    Purpose:

    • To isolate and identify flavonoid compounds from the 75% ethanol extract of Selaginella uncinata.
    • To characterize the isolated compounds using physico-chemical properties and spectroscopic data analysis.

    Summary:

    • Nine flavonoids were successfully isolated and purified using multiple chromatographic techniques.
    • The identified compounds include cirsimarin, nepitrin, and several apigenin derivatives.
    • Compounds 1-5, identified as flavonoid glycosides, represent the first isolation of this class from the Selaginella genus.

    Impact:

    • This research contributes to the understanding of the phytochemical profile of Selaginella uncinata.
    • The discovery of novel flavonoid glycosides may open avenues for further pharmacological investigations.
