In adolescent females with type 1 diabetes, illness perceptions significantly impact metabolic control (HbA1c). These factors did not show a significant association in adolescent males with type 1 diabetes.
Area of Science:
- Endocrinology
- Psychology
- Adolescent Health
Background:
- Disturbed eating behaviors and psychosocial factors affect metabolic control in type 1 diabetes.
- Limited understanding exists regarding the interplay of these variables and their combined/separate effects on metabolic control.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate associations between metabolic control (HbA1c) and eating disorder psychopathology, coping strategies, illness perceptions, and insulin beliefs in adolescents with type 1 diabetes.
Main Methods:
- 105 adolescents (12-20 years) with type 1 diabetes were assessed.
- Utilized the Child Eating Disorder Examination and self-report psychosocial questionnaires.
- Clinical data, including HbA1c, were sourced from the Norwegian Childhood Diabetes Registry.
Main Results:
- Significant gender differences observed in metabolic control associations.
- In females, HbA1c correlated with eating restriction, illness perception dimensions (consequences, personal control, coherence, concern), and ventilating negative feelings.
- Illness perception personal control significantly predicted HbA1c variance (23%) in females; no significant associations found in males.
Conclusions:
- Illness perceptions are significant contributors to metabolic control in adolescent females with type 1 diabetes.
- These associations were not significant in adolescent males with type 1 diabetes.
