  • To investigate the association between iron deficiency, anemia, and submaximal exercise capacity in stable CHF patients.

  • A cross-sectional study involving 538 stable CHF patients.
  • Evaluated submaximal exercise capacity using the 6-minute walk test (6MWT).
  • Assessed iron status via serum ferritin, transferrin saturation, and soluble transferrin receptor.

Main Results:

  • Patients with iron deficiency exhibited significantly lower 6MWT distances compared to those without (285m vs 322m).
  • Iron deficiency was linked to increased exercise-induced fatigue.
  • Soluble transferrin receptor levels showed a significant, independent association with reduced submaximal exercise capacity.

  • Iron deficiency, independent of anemia (hemoglobin levels), is associated with impaired submaximal exercise capacity in CHF.
  • Symptomatic functional limitation is more prevalent in CHF patients with iron deficiency.
