Clot Retraction and Fibrinolysis01:16

Clot Retraction and Fibrinolysis

10.2K
After a fibrin clot is formed, the next step is clot retraction, a vital process facilitated by platelet contractile proteins, such as actin and myosin. These proteins pull the fibrin strands closer together and condense the clot. This action reduces the size of the clot, creating a smaller, denser structure that effectively seals off the damaged vessel. Clot retraction consolidates the clot and helps with wound healing by bringing the edges of the damaged blood vessel closer together.

Mismatch Repair

7.0K
Organisms are capable of detecting and fixing nucleotide mismatches that occur during DNA replication. This sophisticated process requires identifying the new strand and replacing the erroneous bases with correct nucleotides. Mismatch repair is coordinated by many proteins in both prokaryotes and eukaryotes.

Synthesis of new DNA molecules is carried out by the enzyme DNA polymerase, which adds nucleotides on the daughter strand complementary to the template DNA strand. DNA polymerase has a higher affinity to add the correct base and ensures fidelity during DNA replication. Furthermore,  it exhibits proofreading activity during replication, using an exonuclease domain that cuts off incorrect nucleotides from the nascent DNA strand.

Area of Science:

  • Physiology
  • Occupational Health
  • Marine Biology

Context:

  • Tasmania's aquaculture industry relies on specific bounce-diving schedules.
  • Decompression stress is a significant risk for divers.
  • Previous validation of these schedules was limited.

Purpose:

  • To validate the existing bounce-diving schedules used in Tasmania's aquaculture industry.
  • To assess decompression stress using Doppler analysis.
  • To ensure the safety and efficiency of diving operations.

Summary:

  • The study employed Doppler analysis to measure decompression stress in divers following established bounce-diving schedules.
  • Field validation confirmed that the current schedules effectively manage decompression stress.
  • Results support the continued use of these protocols in the Tasmanian aquaculture sector.

Impact:

  • Provides evidence-based support for current diving safety protocols in a key Australian industry.
  • Contributes to the understanding of decompression physiology in commercial diving.
  • Enhances the safety standards for aquaculture divers, potentially reducing the incidence of decompression sickness.
