Self-report inventories are objective personality assessments that use multiple-choice items or numbered scales, typically ranging from 1 (strongly disagree) to 5 (strongly agree). They are often called Likert scales after Rensis Likert. These inventories are widely used due to their ease of administration and cost-effectiveness. One of the most prominent examples is the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI), initially developed in the 1940s to assess abnormal personality traits.

Background:

The Mood and Anxiety Symptom Questionnaire (MASQ) is a comprehensive tool for assessing psychiatric symptoms.
Improving the efficiency of symptom assessment in clinical settings is crucial for patient care and research.

Purpose of the Study:

To evaluate the potential of Computerized Adaptive Testing (CAT) to enhance the efficiency of the MASQ.
To determine if CAT can reduce the number of items administered without compromising measurement precision or predictive utility.

Main Methods:

A post hoc simulation study was conducted using data from 3,597 psychiatric outpatients.
CAT simulations were performed on the three MASQ subscales: Positive Affect, Negative Affect, and Somatic Anxiety.
A high level of measurement precision was set as the stopping rule for the CAT simulations.

Main Results:

CAT simulations demonstrated a substantial reduction in the number of items used, ranging from 56% to 74% across subscales.
The predictive utility of the CAT simulations was found to be sufficient for all MASQ scales.
The efficiency gains were achieved while maintaining high measurement precision.

Conclusions:

Developing a MASQ CAT is a viable and beneficial approach for assessing clinical subjects.
CAT offers a more efficient measurement of mood and anxiety symptoms compared to traditional administration.
The findings support the use of CAT for the MASQ to improve assessment efficiency in psychiatric populations without sacrificing reliability.
