Creating new relational structures allows for novel role-governed categories, as demonstrated by event-related potentials (ERPs). This study reveals how interpreting novel verbs facilitates understanding new role terms, impacting semantic integration and working memory.

  • Recorded event-related potentials (ERPs) while participants read text passages.
  • Participants interpreted novel verbs derived from nouns, instantiating novel relational representations.
  • Comprehension of novel role terms derived from these verbs was compared to a control condition.

Main Results:

  • Comprehension of novel role terms was facilitated when derived from novel verbs compared to paraphrasing.
  • This facilitation was indicated by reduced negativity (400–500 ms) in ERPs, consistent with N400 and Nref effects.
  • Sustained negativity until 670 ms, without P600 effects, suggests non-morphosyntactic processing.

Conclusions:

  • Interpreting novel verbs licenses the creation and comprehension of novel role-governed categories.
  • The observed ERP effects (N400, Nref) point to semantic integration and working memory resolution.
  • The findings rule out morphosyntactic processes as the root of this category licensing effect.
