Summary
Intraventricular gangliogliomas (GG) are rare brain tumors. Complete surgical removal offers excellent outcomes, though the need for adjuvant therapy remains debated for these challenging neoplasms.
Area of Science:
- Neuro-oncology
- Neurosurgery
- Neuropathology
Background:
- Gangliogliomas (GG) are typically benign primary brain tumors found in young adults.
- Intraventricular location of gangliogliomas is exceptionally rare, presenting unique diagnostic and therapeutic challenges.
Observation:
- A case of multicentric intraventricular ganglioglioma in a 15-year-old girl with hydrocephalus is presented.
- Imaging revealed two distinct lesions in the anterior and posterior third ventricles.
- The patient underwent successful surgical excision in two stages following shunt insertion.
Findings:
- A literature review identified 21 cases of pure intraventricular gangliogliomas.
- Increased intracranial pressure was the most common presenting symptom; seizures occurred in 25% of cases.
- Gross total resection was achieved in 90% of cases, with 10% experiencing recurrence and 10% mortality.
Implications:
- Intraventricular gangliogliomas are rare but manageable with complete surgical excision.
- The optimal role of adjuvant therapy for intraventricular gangliogliomas requires further investigation.
- This study contributes to understanding the clinicoradiologic characteristics of intraventricular versus parenchymal gangliogliomas.
