Area of Science:

  • Oncology
  • Gastroenterology
  • Pathology

Background:

  • Malignant disease-induced pancreatitis is a rare clinical presentation.
  • Acute pancreatitis necessitates a thorough etiological investigation, especially when common causes are absent.

Observation:

  • A case of lymphoma presenting initially as acute pancreatitis, complicated by a pancreatic abscess, is detailed.
  • The patient succumbed to the illness six weeks post-initial pancreatitis symptoms.
  • Review of five similar reported cases indicates a consistent pattern.

Findings:

  • In all reviewed cases, pancreatitis preceded the lymphoma diagnosis.
  • Preoperative diagnosis of lymphoma as the cause of pancreatitis proved consistently challenging.
  • Lymphoma should be considered in the differential diagnosis of acute pancreatitis.

Implications:

  • This highlights the importance of considering uncommon etiologies like lymphoma in acute pancreatitis.
  • Early recognition and diagnosis of lymphoma-induced pancreatitis may improve patient outcomes.
  • Further research into the mechanisms and diagnostic markers of pancreatitis secondary to malignancy is warranted.
