Summary

Maintenance electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) may reduce psychiatric hospitalizations and length of stay for severe disorders. This study suggests M-ECT offers potential benefits, warranting further investigation for its use as an alternative treatment.

Background:

Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) is effective for severe psychiatric disorders.
Limited research exists on ECT's role in maintenance therapy.

Purpose of the Study:

To investigate the efficacy of maintenance electroconvulsive therapy (M-ECT) in reducing hospitalizations and length of stay.
To contribute to understanding M-ECT as a potential long-term treatment strategy.

Main Methods:

Retrospective analysis of data from 28 patients undergoing M-ECT.
Mirror-image design comparing outcomes before and after M-ECT initiation.
Assessment of length of hospital stay and readmission rates.

Main Results:

A significant decrease in length of stay was observed following M-ECT.
The number of readmissions also decreased, though this finding was influenced by site-specific factors.
M-ECT demonstrated a positive impact on patient management.

Conclusions:

Maintenance electroconvulsive therapy (M-ECT) shows potential benefits in managing severe psychiatric disorders.
Further research is essential to confirm M-ECT's utility as an alternative long-term treatment.
