Background:

  • Complex spinal surgery carries a high risk of devastating wound complications, affecting up to 19% of patients.
  • Very high-risk patients (prior surgery, infection, CSF leak, malignancy, radiation) face complication rates as high as 40% and reoperation rates up to 12%.
  • Investigating prophylactic muscle flaps for spinal wound closure is crucial to improve patient outcomes.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the efficacy of local muscle flaps in reducing postoperative wound complications in patients undergoing complex spinal surgery.
  • To assess the impact of muscle flap closure on reoperation rates in high-risk spinal surgery patients.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective review of 102 spinal reconstructions in 96 patients from 2006-2014.
  • Closure utilized paraspinous, trapezius, or latissimus muscle advancement flaps.
