PREGNANCY, THYROTOXICOSIS AND POLYMYOSITIS.

    Summary

    A pregnant woman experienced leg weakness due to hyperthyroid-induced myopathy. Treatment with glucocorticoids and methimazole led to significant improvement.

    Background:

    • Pregnancy can present unique diagnostic challenges, sometimes unmasking or exacerbating underlying conditions.
    • Thyroid dysfunction, particularly hyperthyroidism, can manifest with neuromuscular symptoms.

    Observation:

    • A 26-year-old pregnant female presented with acute onset leg weakness and difficulty lifting her arms.
    • Neurological and systemic examinations were otherwise unremarkable.

    Findings:

    • Investigations revealed elevated serum muscle enzymes, abnormal thyroid hormone levels, electromyography-confirmed myopathy, and muscle biopsy consistent with myositis.
    • Differential diagnoses for myositis were excluded.
