Adolescents with HIV generally have positive body image, but some experience concerns with self-care and specific body areas. Many normal-weight youth desire larger body size, particularly men who have sex with men.
Area of Science:
- Psychology
- Adolescent Health
- HIV/AIDS Research
Background:
- Emerging research indicates a higher prevalence of negative body image in adults with HIV.
- Limited research exists on body image perceptions among adolescents living with HIV.
Purpose of the Study:
- To explore and characterize body image perceptions in adolescents living with HIV.
- To identify specific aspects of body image that may be of concern within this population.
Main Methods:
- An exploratory study involving 143 adolescents (aged 16-24 years, 69% male) living with HIV.
- Utilized Audio Computer Assisted Self-Interview Questionnaire for body image, psychosocial, medical, and sociodemographic data.
- Medical records were reviewed for medical history and physical functioning information.
Main Results:
- Global body image was normative, but some subscales showed decreased interest in self-care/appearance and concerns with individual body areas.
- Most youth preferred their current body shape, yet 41% of overweight youth were content, and 47% of normal-weight youth desired a larger body size.
- Men who have sex with men most frequently desired a larger body size.
Conclusions:
- Adolescents with HIV generally exhibit normative body image, with specific areas of concern needing clinical attention.
- Body size satisfaction varies, with a notable proportion of normal-weight youth desiring larger bodies.
- Findings highlight the need for tailored clinical care addressing body image in adolescents living with HIV.
