Summary

Silicone synovitis can cause erosive wrist arthropathy years after lunate prosthesis implantation. Early diagnosis is crucial, as symptoms may mimic infection or crystal-induced conditions, delaying recognition of this foreign body reaction.

Area of Science:

  • Orthopedic Surgery
  • Rheumatology
  • Biomaterials Science

Background:

  • Silicone implants are utilized in orthopedic surgery for joint reconstruction.
  • Lunate prostheses are used to treat wrist arthritis and instability.

Observation:

  • A patient developed erosive arthropathy in the right wrist.
  • Symptoms appeared three years after the implantation of a silicone lunate prosthesis.

Findings:

  • The patient's condition was diagnosed as silicone synovitis.
  • This diagnosis was delayed due to initial considerations of infection or crystal-induced arthropathy.

Implications:

  • Silicone synovitis is an increasingly recognized complication of bone and joint implants.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Clinicians should consider foreign body reaction in patients with arthropathy after silicone implant surgery.
  • Timely diagnosis of silicone synovitis is essential for appropriate patient management and outcomes.
