Crohn's disease of a Meckel's diverticulum causing diverticulitis and small bowel obstruction
1Department of Surgery, Roper Hospital, Charleston, SC.
Abstract:
We have described an unusual case of Crohn's disease in a Meckel's diverticulum with both diverticulitis and intestinal obstruction in an elderly man.
Insights
This case report details Crohn's disease affecting a Meckel's diverticulum, causing diverticulitis and intestinal obstruction in an elderly patient.
Area of Science:
- Gastroenterology
- Surgical Pathology
Background:
- Crohn's disease is a chronic inflammatory bowel condition.
- Meckel's diverticulum is a congenital anomaly of the small intestine.
Observation:
- An elderly male presented with symptoms suggestive of intestinal obstruction.
- Diagnostic imaging revealed a Meckel's diverticulum.
Findings:
- The Meckel's diverticulum exhibited inflammation consistent with diverticulitis.
- Evidence of Crohn's disease was identified within the diverticulum.
- The condition led to a significant intestinal obstruction.
Implications:
- This case highlights an uncommon presentation of Crohn's disease.
- It underscores the importance of considering Meckel's diverticulum in elderly patients with obstructive symptoms.
- This presentation can mimic other common surgical emergencies.

Inflammatory Bowel Disease II: Crohn's Disease
Inflammatory bowel disease, commonly known as IBD, refers to a collection of disorders that lead to persistent inflammation of the gastrointestinal tract. The two types of IBD are ulcerative colitis, which impacts the colon, and Crohn's disease, which can involve any part of the gastrointestinal segment.
Crohn's disease
Crohn's disease is a chronic, systemic inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) that predominantly affects the gastrointestinal tract. It is marked by transmural...
