Treatment Resistant Cancers02:56

Treatment Resistant Cancers

2.6K
Cancer is the second leading cause of death in the United States. A cancer cell is genetically unstable and hence can mutate faster. They can also modify their microenvironment and escape immune surveillance. The difficulties in treating cancer are further compounded by the emergence of rapid resistance to anticancer drugs. The most common ways to attain resistance in cancer cells include alteration in drug transport and metabolism, modification of drug target, elevated DNA damage response, or...

Nursing Ethical Principles II01:27

Nursing Ethical Principles II

2.4K
Ethical principles are essential in guiding nurses to fulfill their responsibilities, focusing on the quality of nursing care and decision-making. These principles, including autonomy, beneficence, non-maleficence, justice, and fidelity, shape the ethical framework within healthcare settings.
Consider the following scenario, which illustrates how these principles are applied in the care of Mr. John, a fifty-year-old teacher diagnosed with metastatic liver cancer.
Initially, Mr. John's...

Cancer Survival Analysis01:21

Cancer Survival Analysis

863
Cancer survival analysis focuses on quantifying and interpreting the time from a key starting point, such as diagnosis or the initiation of treatment, to a specific endpoint, such as remission or death. This analysis provides critical insights into treatment effectiveness and factors that influence patient outcomes, helping to shape clinical decisions and guide prognostic evaluations. A cornerstone of oncology research, survival analysis tackles the challenges of skewed, non-normally...

Kidney Transplant III: Nursing Management

Postoperative Nursing Management for Kidney Transplant PatientsPostoperative nursing management care includes monitoring the surgical site, encouraging early movement, and promoting lung health through breathing exercises. Nurses also administer prescribed medications like H2-blockers, such as famotidine, or proton pump inhibitors, like omeprazole, to help prevent gastrointestinal ulcers and bleeding. Fungal infections in the mouth and bladder can result from immunosuppressive and antibiotic...

Erikson's Theory on Socioemotional Development during Adulthood

1.8K
Erik Erikson's theory of psychosocial development outlines a series of stages through which individuals progress across the lifespan. Each stage involves a psychosocial conflict that significantly influences personal growth and well-being. Three key stages — intimacy versus isolation, generativity versus stagnation, and integrity versus despair — highlight the developmental challenges faced in adulthood.

Psychoneuroimmunology: Diabetes and Cancer

531
Chronic stress has been linked to both the onset and progression of serious health conditions, including Type 2 diabetes and cancer. Type 2 diabetes, a widespread chronic illness, is closely associated with obesity and insulin resistance, both of which often worsen under stress. Studies indicate that men experiencing high levels of chronic stress face a 45% higher risk of developing diabetes compared to those with minimal stress. Stress triggers physiological responses that elevate blood...

Area of Science:

  • Oncology
  • Psychosocial Health
  • Cancer Survivorship

Background:

  • Adult cancer survivorship presents unique psychosocial challenges.
  • Limited literature exists on the long-term psychosocial implications for cancer survivors.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To comprehensively review the literature on the psychosocial implications of adult cancer survivorship.
  • To identify key psychosocial themes impacting long-term cancer survivors.

Main Methods:

  • Systematic literature search of MEDLINE and Index Medicus (1970-1988).
  • Included bibliographic reviews of textbooks and review articles.
  • 58 selected articles were reviewed and critiqued by four authors.

Main Results:

  • Identified significant psychosocial themes: fear of recurrence/death, healthcare team relationships, physical adjustment, social support changes, isolation, psychosocial reorientation, and employment/insurance concerns.
  • Highlighted a lack of comprehensive information on these variables.

Conclusions:

  • Rehabilitation efforts should extend beyond initial cancer diagnosis to include post-therapy evaluation and guidance.
  • There is a need to mobilize education, research, and support interventions for adult cancer survivors.
