Purpose of the Study:

  • To estimate workforce participation characteristics in workplace wellness programs.
  • To assess employees' attitudes towards participating in these programs.

  • A statewide stratified random sample of 1171 employed Iowans (ages 18-65) was surveyed via telephone.
  • Data included employee demographics, employment size, and validated instruments for wellness needs, employment, and health performance.
  • Analysis involved comparing participation by employment size and multivariable modeling of employee characteristics.

Main Results:

  • Employees in smaller workplaces (<50 employees) showed lower participation in screening programs.
  • Male gender and abnormal body mass index were linked to non-participation; having a primary care physician was associated with participation.
  • Few significant differences were found in the willingness to participate across different employee groups.

  • Workforce characteristics and healthcare access significantly influence participation in screening and wellness programs.
  • Employment size does not appear to be a determining factor for employees' willingness to participate in wellness initiatives.
