Parkinson's Disease: Overview

2.4K
Neurodegenerative disorders are progressive diseases that cause irreversible damage and loss to neurons in specific brain areas. Examples of these disorders include Parkinson's disease, Alzheimer's disease, Multiple Sclerosis (MS), and Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS). These disorders share characteristics such as proteinopathies, selective neuronal vulnerability, and a complex interplay between genetic and environmental factors. The primary therapeutic goal for these conditions is...

Parkinson's Disease: Treatment

1.3K
Neurodegenerative disorders, such as Parkinson's Disease (PD), involve the gradual and irreversible destruction of neurons in particular brain areas. These disorders exhibit standard features like proteinopathies, selective vulnerability of some neurons, and an interaction of intrinsic properties, genetics, and environmental influences in neural injury.
Parkinson's Disease is primarily a result of the loss of dopaminergic neurons in the substantia nigra pars compacta. The cornerstone of...

    Summary

Kinect v2 accurately assesses Parkinson's disease (PD) by analyzing human motion, outperforming Kinect v1. This system effectively distinguishes between healthy individuals and PD patients with varying deep brain stimulation (DBS) settings.

    Area of Science:

    • Biomedical Engineering
    • Clinical Neurology
    • Rehabilitation Technology

    Background:

    • Human motion analysis aids in assessing movement disorders like Parkinson's disease (PD).
    • Previous systems like Kinect v1 have shown potential but with limitations.
    • Deep brain stimulation (DBS) is a treatment for PD that can affect motor function.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the Kinect v2 system's effectiveness for clinical Parkinson's disease assessment.
    • To compare the performance of Kinect v2 against the original Kinect (v1) for PD evaluation.
    • To determine the suitability of extracted gait parameters for differentiating PD patient states.

    Main Methods:

    • Acquired 3-D body joint data from healthy subjects and PD patients (with and without active DBS).
    • Utilized Kinect v2 and Kinect v1 systems for data acquisition.
    • Extracted and analyzed various gait parameters from the collected motion data.

    Main Results:

    • Kinect v2 correctly identified 96% of parameters for distinguishing between non-PD subjects, PD patients with DBS on, and PD patients with DBS off (p < 0.001).
    • Kinect v1 identified only 73% of parameters as appropriate for the same distinctions (p < 0.001).
    • Kinect v2 demonstrated significantly superior performance in classifying subject groups.

    Conclusions:

    • Kinect v2 is a highly suitable system for supporting clinical Parkinson's disease assessment.
    • The Kinect v2 system offers improved accuracy over Kinect v1 for PD gait analysis.
    • Motion analysis using Kinect v2 can effectively differentiate PD patient states related to DBS therapy.
