    Area of Science:

    • Biomedical Engineering
    • Medical Device Safety
    • Electrosurgery

    Background:

    • Electrosurgery is a standard operating room tool with known interference issues.
    • Unintended thermal effects, particularly around medical implants, are not well-documented.
    • Patient safety concerns necessitate a deeper understanding of electrosurgical heating.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate unintended heating caused by electrosurgery in and around implants.
    • To analyze the influence of implant characteristics and electrode placement on thermal effects.
    • To provide data for improving the safe use of electrosurgery with implants.

    Main Methods:

    • Utilized Finite Element Modeling (FEM) to simulate electrosurgical scenarios.
    • Varied parameters including implant shape, size, and active electrode proximity.
    • Quantified temperature distribution and maximum temperature rise in simulated tissues and implants.

    Main Results:

    • All simulated factors (shape, size, electrode placement) significantly influenced unintended heating.
    • Specific configurations demonstrated higher potential for thermal damage.
    • The study identified critical parameters governing heat accumulation.

    Conclusions:

    • Electrosurgery poses a risk of unintended heating around implants, influenced by multiple factors.
    • Finite Element Modeling is a valuable tool for assessing these thermal risks.
    • Further research and clinical guidelines are needed to mitigate electrosurgical risks with implants.
