Summary

A cured Fusobacterium necrophorum infection in mice, when combined with Escherichia coli, induced slight resistance to subsequent F. necrophorum challenge. However, this resistance was too minimal to support necrobacillosis vaccine development.

Area of Science:

  • Microbiology
  • Immunology
  • Infectious Diseases

Background:

  • Sub-lethal bacterial infections can enhance the infectivity of Fusobacterium necrophorum.
  • Necrobacillosis is a severe disease caused by F. necrophorum.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the development of resistance to F. necrophorum following a cured infection, particularly when coinfected with Escherichia coli.
  • To assess the potential for necrobacillosis vaccine development based on induced resistance.

Main Methods:

  • Mice with a cured F. necrophorum infection were challenged with a low dose of F. necrophorum combined with a sub-lethal dose of E. coli.
  • Control groups were challenged with F. necrophorum alone or F. necrophorum with E. coli without prior infection.
  • Resistance was assessed by survival rates and disease severity.

Related Experiment Videos

Main Results:

  • A cured F. necrophorum infection, when coinfected with E. coli, conferred slight but demonstrable resistance to a subsequent F. necrophorum challenge.
  • A prior F. necrophorum infection alone, even when cured, did not induce significant resistance to a large F. necrophorum challenge.
  • A sub-lethal E. coli infection alone also provided slight protection against F. necrophorum challenge.

Conclusions:

  • The induced resistance to necrobacillosis in this model is minimal.
  • The findings do not support the development of an effective necrobacillosis vaccine based on this approach.
