Epiphytes, Parasites, and Carnivores02:40

Epiphytes, Parasites, and Carnivores

17.1K
Plants often form mutualistic relationships with soil-dwelling fungi or bacteria to enhance their roots’ nutrient uptake ability. Root-colonizing fungi (e.g., mycorrhizae) increase a plant’s root surface area, which promotes nutrient absorption. While root-colonizing, nitrogen-fixing bacteria (e.g., rhizobia) convert atmospheric nitrogen (N2) into ammonia (NH3), making nitrogen available to plants for various biological functions. For example, nitrogen is essential for the...

Non-vascular Seedless Plants

75.6K
The diverse plant life on Earth—consisting of nearly 400,000 species—can be divided into three broad categories based on biological characteristics: nonvascular, seedless vascular, and seed plants.

The Angiosperm Life Cycle02:39

The Angiosperm Life Cycle

76.6K
Plants have a life cycle split between two multicellular stages: a haploid stage—with cells containing one set of chromosomes—and a diploid stage—with cells containing two sets of chromosomes. The haploid stage is the gamete-producing gametophyte, and the diploid stage is the spore-producing sporophyte.

Pollination and Flower Structure02:40

Pollination and Flower Structure

80.9K
Flowers are the reproductive, seed-producing structures of angiosperms. Typically, flowers consist of sepals, petals, stamens, and carpels. Sepals and petals are the vegetative flower organs. Stamens and carpels are the reproductive organs.

Migration00:53

Migration

9.1K
Migration is long-range, seasonal movement from one region or habitat to another. This common strategy, carried out by many different organisms around the world, is an adaptive response that typically corresponds to changes in an organism’s environment, like resource availability or climate. Migrations can involve huge groups of thousands of animals as well as single individuals traveling alone and can range from thousands of kilometers to just a few hundred meters.

Area of Science:

  • Botany
  • Plant Taxonomy
  • Molecular Phylogenetics

Background:

  • Thelypteridaceae family classification requires revision to reflect evolutionary relationships.
  • Previous classifications may not align with current molecular data.
  • Monophyletic generic circumscriptions are essential for accurate plant systematics.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To propose new nomenclatural combinations for Neotropical Thelypteridaceae.
  • To establish monophyletic genera based on molecular and morphological evidence.
  • To provide a comprehensive taxonomic key for Neotropical genera.

Main Methods:

  • Utilizing results from the latest molecular phylogeny of the Thelypteridaceae family.
  • Analyzing morphological uniformity of characters within proposed genera.
  • Implementing new taxonomic nomenclature for species within the family.

Main Results:

  • 288 new nomenclatural combinations are proposed for Neotropical Thelypteridaceae.
  • These combinations establish monophyletic genera: 186 for Amauropelta, 77 for Goniopteris, and 25 for Steiropteris.
  • A key to all native Neotropical genera of the Thelypteridaceae is presented.

Conclusions:

  • The proposed combinations improve the monophyly of Neotropical Thelypteridaceae genera.
  • This work provides a foundation for future research in fern taxonomy and systematics.
  • The new key facilitates identification of native Neotropical ferns within the family.
