  • Third-year medical students (n=92) viewed videos of primary generalized and complex partial seizures.
  • Students completed both unstructured and structured questionnaires assessing seizure features.
  • The number and types of correct responses were compared between the two questionnaire formats.

Main Results:

  • The structured questionnaire yielded significantly more correct responses (9.25) than the unstructured one (5.30) (p < 0.001).
  • Ten specific seizure features were identified more effectively using the structured questionnaire.
  • Prior personal or familial experience with epilepsy did not influence students' accuracy in identifying seizure features.

Conclusions:

  • A structured questionnaire demonstrably improves medical students' accuracy in describing witnessed seizures (primary generalized and complex partial).
  • The study identified 10 specific seizure features that are better assessed using a structured approach.
