  • To compare the perceptions of nurses and patients regarding communication barriers and facilitators.
  • To provide recommendations for improving nurse-patient communication in clinical settings.

Main Methods:

  • A cross-sectional, descriptive analytic study was conducted involving 70 nurses and 50 patients from two hospitals.
  • Two separate, validated questionnaires were administered to assess nurse-related, patient-related, and environmental factors influencing communication.
  • Statistical analysis was performed to compare mean scores between nurses and patients.

Main Results:

  • Nurse-related factors were perceived as most significant by both nurses (mean score 2.45) and patients (mean score 2.15).
  • Common factors between nurses and patients were considered least significant (mean scores 1.85 and 1.96, respectively).
  • Significant differences were found in perceptions of patient-related (p=0.001), nurse-related (p=0.012), and environmental factors (p=0.019).

Conclusions:

  • Despite mutual attention to communication, significant barriers exist between nurses and patients.
  • Raising awareness among both nurses and patients, alongside fostering a conducive environment, can mitigate these barriers.
  • Enhanced communication skills training for nurses, coupled with ongoing monitoring, is recommended to improve healthcare interactions.
