Summary

Primary lung sarcomas are rare, with leiomyosarcoma being a common subtype. Complete resection of pulmonary leiomyosarcoma offers a better prognosis compared to other lung sarcomas.

Background:

Primary lung sarcomas are rare, comprising 0.5% of lung tumors, with ~300 cases reported by 2006.
Common intrathoracic sarcoma subtypes include angiosarcoma, leiomyosarcoma, fibrosarcoma, hemangiopericytoma, and rhabdomyosarcoma.
Biological behavior of these rare tumors is not well-understood due to low incidence.

Purpose of the Study:

To describe the characteristics and outcomes of primary pulmonary leiomyosarcoma.
To highlight the importance of complete surgical resection for improved patient survival.
To report a case of primary bronchial leiomyosarcoma with successful resection and follow-up.

Main Methods:

Literature review of primary lung sarcomas and their subtypes.
Analysis of clinical presentation, treatment, and outcomes for pulmonary leiomyosarcoma.
Case report detailing a patient with primary bronchial leiomyosarcoma.

Main Results:

Pulmonary leiomyosarcomas typically affect individuals in their sixth decade, with a male predominance.
Prognosis is poorer in high-grade tumors, irrespective of metastatic disease.
Complete resection of pulmonary leiomyosarcoma is associated with longer survival compared to other sarcomas.

Conclusions:

Primary pulmonary leiomyosarcoma is a significant subtype requiring careful management.
Complete surgical resection is crucial for favorable long-term outcomes.
This case demonstrates successful management and long-term survival following resection of a primary bronchial leiomyosarcoma.
