Summary

Statin use is associated with a higher likelihood of needing cataract surgery. This finding suggests that increased statin prescriptions may contribute to the rising number of cataract surgeries performed.

Background:

Cataract surgery is a common procedure, and its incidence is rising.
Statins are widely prescribed medications for cholesterol management.

Purpose of the Study:

To investigate the association between statin medication use and the occurrence of cataract surgery.

Main Methods:

A population-based, retrospective case-control study was conducted using data from the Rochester Epidemiology Project.
6024 individuals aged 50+ who underwent first-eye cataract surgery were compared with matched controls who had no cataract surgery.
Statin use was defined as continuous prescription for at least one year prior to the index date.

Main Results:

A higher proportion of statin users (42%) were found among cases (cataract surgery) compared to controls (34%).
Incident cataract surgery was significantly associated with increased odds of statin use (OR 1.29, 95% CI 1.19-1.55), even after adjusting for multiple covariates.
This association was observed consistently in both female and male subgroups.

Conclusions:

Incident cataract surgery demonstrated a significant association with increased odds of statin use.
The findings suggest that the increasing prevalence of statin use may be a contributing factor to the rising rates of cataract surgery.
