[Hydatid cyst of the pericardium and diaphragm. Apropos of a case]
1Clinique médicale infantile, CHU Mustapha, Alger, Algérie.
Insights
A rare case of hydatid disease involving both the pericardium and diaphragm is presented. Diagnosis of the pericardial cyst was confirmed via echocardiography, while the diaphragmatic cyst was found during surgery.
Area of Science:
- Cardiology
- Parasitology
- Thoracic Surgery
Background:
- Hydatid disease, caused by Echinococcus granulosus, typically affects the liver and lungs.
- Pericardial and diaphragmatic involvement is exceptionally rare, posing diagnostic and therapeutic challenges.
Observation:
- A patient presented with symptoms leading to the diagnosis of a pericardial hydatid cyst.
- Echocardiography was instrumental in identifying the pericardial cyst pre-operatively.
Findings:
- The study reports a unique co-occurrence of hydatid disease in the pericardium and diaphragm.
- Surgical exploration revealed the diaphragmatic hydatid cyst, which was not evident on pre-operative imaging.
Implications:
- This case highlights the importance of considering rare presentations of hydatid disease.
- Advanced imaging and intraoperative findings are crucial for diagnosing multi-site hydatidosis.
- Successful surgical management underscores the potential for favorable outcomes in complex cases.
Abstract:
A rare cas of hydatic disease is reported, located both in the pericardium and diaphragm. The pericardial cyst was diagnosed on the basis of clinical examination and echocardiography. The diaphragmatic cyst was only discovered during surgery.
