Abstract:
A person who fears that he or she may be infected with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV-1) is likely to seek help from a primary care physician, so preparation is vital. The authors discuss how to differentiate HIV-1 infection from disorders that may have a similar presentation, the importance of referring the patient to available community resources, and the best ways to accomplish long-term suppression of infection.
