Background:

  • Injured workers frequently undergo functional capacity evaluations (FCEs) after spinal fusion surgery.
  • Limited research exists on FCE outcomes following spinal fusion procedures.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To characterize the functional capacity outcomes of patients after spinal fusion surgery.
  • To identify factors influencing postoperative work capability.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective review of prospectively collected data from patients undergoing transforaminal lumbar interbody fusion (TLIF) or anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF).
  • Patients' preoperative physical demands and postoperative work capabilities were categorized (light, medium, heavy) based on FCE reports.
  • Regression analysis was used to identify predictors of meeting preoperative job requirements.

Main Results:

  • Out of 173 patients, 37% of TLIF and 54% of ACDF patients met their preoperative job requirements.
  • Postoperative capabilities included light (41-58%), medium (25-37%), and heavy (17-14%) for TLIF and ACDF, respectively.
  • Lower preoperative job requirements and younger age (for ACDF) predicted meeting postoperative work demands.

Conclusions:

  • A significant majority of patients undergoing spinal fusion for occupational injuries do not regain the capacity for heavy or medium-duty work.
  • Approximately half of the patients are unable to return to their previous occupational responsibilities.
  • Findings can inform patient counseling regarding realistic postoperative work expectations.
