Area of Science:

  • Natural Products Chemistry
  • Medicinal Chemistry
  • Pharmacology

Background:

  • Clerodendrum kiangsiense is a plant species known for its traditional medicinal uses.
  • Diterpenoids are a class of natural compounds with diverse biological activities, including potential anticancer properties.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To isolate and characterize new and known diterpenoids from Clerodendrum kiangsiense.
  • To evaluate the cytotoxic activities of these isolated compounds against various human cancer cell lines.

Main Methods:

  • Hydroalcoholic extraction of Clerodendrum kiangsiense herb.
  • Isolation and structure elucidation of compounds using spectroscopic analyses (e.g., 2D NMR).
  • Cytotoxicity evaluation using the MTT assay against HL-60, SMMC-7721, A-549, and MCF-7 cancer cell lines.

Main Results:

  • A novel abeo-abietane diterpenoid (compound 8) was isolated, along with seven known diterpenoids.
  • Compounds 4 (cryptojaponol), 6 (fortunin E), and the new compound 8 demonstrated significant cytotoxicity against the tested cancer cell lines.

Conclusions:

  • Clerodendrum kiangsiense is a source of bioactive diterpenoids with potential anticancer properties.
  • Compounds 4, 6, and 8 warrant further investigation as lead compounds for cancer therapy development.
