Area of Science:

  • Radiology
  • Vascular Surgery

Background:

  • Portal hypertension can lead to unusual vascular manifestations.
  • Retroperitoneal masses require careful differential diagnosis.

Observation:

  • A case is presented where retroperitoneal varicose veins mimicked neoplastic masses.
  • The patient had undiagnosed portal hypertension.

Findings:

  • Radiological imaging is crucial for differentiating these conditions.
  • Contrast-enhanced computed tomography (CECT) is highlighted as a key diagnostic tool.

Implications:

  • Accurate diagnosis prevents unnecessary surgical intervention for benign conditions.
  • Improved understanding of rare presentations of portal hypertension.
  • CECT enhances diagnostic confidence in complex retroperitoneal cases.
