Background:

  • Erectile dysfunction (ED) is a prevalent yet under-discussed issue among patients undergoing hemodialysis (HD).
  • Limited data exists on the prevalence and severity of ED in this specific patient population.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine the prevalence and severity of erectile dysfunction (ED) in patients receiving hemodialysis (HD).

Main Methods:

  • A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted in an HD unit.
  • The International Index of Erectile Function (IIEF) was used to evaluate ED.
  • Thirty eligible HD patients (mean age 49.1 years) participated.

Main Results:

  • The prevalence of ED was 80%, with 33.3% experiencing severe ED.
  • ED was present in 8.4% before renal failure discovery and 91.6% at dialysis initiation.
  • ED worsened during dialysis sessions for 79.1% of patients.

Conclusions:

  • A significant majority of hemodialysis patients suffer from ED.
  • Nephrologists must address ED to enhance the quality of life for their patients.
