Area of Science:

  • Urology
  • Endocrinology
  • Oncology

Background:

  • Testosterone replacement therapy (TRT) is increasingly used for hypogonadism.
  • Potential prostatic complications of TRT require further clinical investigation.

Observation:

  • Three hypogonadal men developed prostatic disease, including adenocarcinoma in two, during TRT.
  • This highlights a potential link between TRT and prostate pathology.

Findings:

  • Literature review supports surveillance for early prostate cancer in men over 50 undergoing TRT.
  • Prostate-specific antigen (PSA) testing, digital rectal examination (DRE), transrectal sonography, and biopsy are key surveillance tools.

Implications:

  • Selective screening is crucial for older men on androgen replacement therapy.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Early detection of prostate cancer during TRT can improve patient outcomes.
  • Further research into TRT's long-term effects on the prostate is warranted.
