Dislocated intraocular lens nuclei can mimic choroidal melanoma in pseudophakic patients. Echography is crucial for accurate diagnosis of these fundus mass lesions, preventing misdiagnosis of malignant melanoma.

Area of Science:

  • Ophthalmology
  • Medical Imaging

Background:

  • Choroidal malignant melanoma is a serious intraocular tumor requiring accurate diagnosis.
  • Pseudophakic patients with fundus mass lesions present diagnostic challenges.

Observation:

  • Three pseudophakic patients with suspected choroidal melanoma underwent echographic examination.
  • Two patients had pre-existing optic nerve damage due to inflammatory glaucoma.

Findings:

  • Echography revealed dislocated intravitreal lens nuclei in all three patients.
  • Dislocated lens nuclei were previously unreported in the differential diagnosis of choroidal melanoma.

Implications:

  • Consider dislocated lens nuclei in the differential diagnosis of fundus mass lesions in aphakic or pseudophakic individuals.
