The implications of the new approach to classification: Adults with an intellectual disability

The new ILAE classification offers the potential for clarity and improved translation of the understanding of the nature of epilepsy in people with an intellectual disability. This is particularly true in the use of the term genetic epilepsy and the removal of the term cryptogenic. However, the definition of the "dyscognitive" nature of seizures needs greater definition in those with coexistent cognitive impairment. This is of particular importance when ameliorating risk associated with impaired consciousness.
