Four new cycloartane glycosides and one oleanane glycoside were isolated from Astragalus pennatulus. These compounds, along with five known glycosides, were tested for cytotoxic activity against cancer cell lines but showed no significant effect.
Area of Science:
- Natural Product Chemistry
- Phytochemistry
- Medicinal Chemistry
Background:
- Astragalus species are known sources of bioactive compounds.
- Cycloartane and oleanane-type glycosides have demonstrated diverse pharmacological activities.
- Investigating novel compounds from medicinal plants is crucial for drug discovery.
Purpose of the Study:
- To isolate and characterize new glycosides from Astragalus pennatulus.
- To evaluate the cytotoxic potential of these isolated compounds against human cancer cell lines.
Main Methods:
- Isolation of compounds using chromatographic techniques.
- Structure elucidation through 1D and 2D-NMR, ESIMS, and HRMS analyses.
- Cytotoxicity assays against A549, A375, and DeFew cancer cell lines.
Main Results:
- Five new glycosides (four cycloartane, one oleanane) were identified and structurally characterized.
- The aglycone of compound 1 is reported for the first time.
- None of the isolated compounds exhibited significant cytotoxic activity against the tested cancer cell lines.
Conclusions:
- Astragalus pennatulus yielded novel cycloartane and oleanane-type glycosides.
- The isolated compounds did not demonstrate cytotoxic effects on A549, A375, or DeFew cells.
- Further research may explore other potential biological activities of these compounds.
