Increased EEG alpha power in drivers indicates reduced alertness and the onset of mental fatigue, correlating with subjective fatigue scores. This suggests alpha power is a potential indicator for driver fatigue countermeasures.

Area of Science:

  • Neuroscience
  • Transportation Safety
  • Human Factors

Background:

  • Driver fatigue is a significant factor in transportation safety, contributing to a substantial percentage of road accidents.
  • Understanding the physiological markers of fatigue is crucial for developing effective safety interventions.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate changes in electroencephalogram (EEG) alpha power in partially sleep-deprived drivers during a simulated driving task.
  • To correlate EEG findings with subjective and observational measures of fatigue.

Main Methods:

  • Twelve healthy male drivers underwent an overnight study involving simulated driving on a virtual reality platform.
  • Continuous EEG and electrooculogram (EOG) data were recorded, alongside video analysis of driver behavior and subjective fatigue assessments (Fatigue Visual Analog Scale - F-VAS).

  • Absolute and relative alpha powers were analyzed using power spectrum density and fast Fourier transform (FFT).
  • Main Results:

    • A significant increase in absolute alpha power was observed in the latter stages of driving (P = 0.006).
    • Subjective fatigue scores (F-VAS) also significantly increased towards the end of the driving period (P = 0.001).
    • Video ratings of driver behavior corroborated the subjective fatigue self-assessments.

    Conclusions:

    • Elevated alpha power in the final driving section signifies decreased alertness and attention, indicative of emerging mental fatigue.
    • EEG alpha power variations show promise as a reliable indicator of driver mental fatigue.
    • Further research is recommended to explore the application of alpha power variations in driver fatigue countermeasure devices.
