Absence of a relationship between thyroid hormones and vitamin D levels
Background:
Vitamin D is an immune modulator that may play a role in thyroid related autoimmunity.
Methods:
We analyzed a US population based dataset to determine the relationship between serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25OHD) and thyroid hormones while assessing the effects of autoimmunity and BMI.
Results:
25OHD did not correlate significantly with any thyroid related measure. 25OHD levels stratified by thyroid antibody status were not statistically different between antibody positive and negative groups. The mean 25OHD levels of lean, overweight, and obese groups defined by BMI were lower than those of the normal group. Only the mean thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) value in the obese group was significantly higher than the normal group.
Conclusions:
We conclude that thyroid related measures and 25OHD serum levels are not related.

Synthesis and Regulation of Thyroid Hormones
Upon reaching the thyroid gland, TSH stimulates the follicular cells' active uptake of iodide ions from the blood. The ions diffuse to the apical surface of the cells and are oxidized to iodine. The...
Functions of Thyroid Hormones
TH is indispensable for the normal development and maturation of the skeletal, muscular, and nervous systems during fetal and childhood growth. It facilitates bone mineral turnover and regulates protein synthesis in developing tissues, contributing significantly to overall growth and...
Role of Skin in Vitamin D Synthesis
The solar UV B rays (290-315 nm) are absorbed by the skin, and 7-dehydrocholesterol (provitamin D3) photolyzes it to previtamin D3, which undergoes a rapid transformation to vitamin...
Hormones and Bone Tissue
Hormones That Influence Osteoblasts and/or Maintain the Matrix
Several hormones are necessary for controlling bone growth and maintaining the bone matrix. The pituitary gland secretes growth hormone (GH), which, as its name implies, controls bone growth. This happens in several ways: first, it triggers chondrocyte...

Role of Vitamins in Maintaining Bone Health
Vitamin A
Vitamin A is involved in the process of bone remodeling. Retinoic acid, the active metabolite of Vitamin A, has nuclear receptors in osteoblasts and osteoclasts, which are involved in bone remodeling.
Vitamin B12
Vitamin B12 acts as a cofactor during the formation of osteoblast-related proteins, such as osteocalcin. Vitamin B12 plays a role...
