Background:

Mammalian conceptuses synthesize prostaglandins (PG) in vitro.
Prostaglandins play vital roles in early embryonic development and maternal recognition of pregnancy.

Purpose of the Study:

To investigate the synthesis of prostaglandins by mammalian conceptuses.
To identify the specific types of prostaglandins produced by different species.
To explore the functional roles of conceptus-derived prostaglandins in reproductive processes.

Main Methods:

In vitro synthesis assays of prostaglandins from conceptuses of various mammalian species.
Quantification and identification of specific prostaglandin metabolites (e.g., PGF-2 alpha, 6-keto-PGF-1 alpha, PGE-2).

Main Results:

Cattle blastocysts primarily produced PGF-2 alpha.
Sheep blastocysts mainly produced 6-keto-PGF-1 alpha and PGF-2 alpha.
Pig blastocysts predominantly synthesized PGE-2.
Rabbits, mice, and rats showed no predominant or detectable PG production.
Conceptus prostaglandins are implicated in embryo migration, blastocyst hatching, ion transport, fluid accumulation, and endometrial permeability.
