Area of Science:

  • Neuroscience
  • Biomedical Engineering
  • Photomedicine

Background:

  • Transcranial laser stimulation (TLS) with near-infrared light is a novel non-invasive photobiomodulation technique.
  • Low-level laser therapy (LLLT) has demonstrated therapeutic potential for various neurological and psychological conditions.
  • Understanding the neurophysiological effects of TLS is crucial for mechanistic studies and treatment efficacy.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the effects of transcranial laser stimulation on cerebral hemodynamics and oxygenation in the human brain.
  • To assess in vivo changes in brain oxygenation using functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS).

Main Methods:

  • Two experiments involved applying 1,064-nm laser stimulation to the forehead (center and right side).
  • Stimulation parameters included a power of 3.4 W, an area of 13.6 cm², and an irradiance of 0.25 W/cm² for 10 minutes.
  • Nine healthy adult participants (18-40 years) were included in each experiment.

Main Results:

  • TLS significantly increased oxygenated hemoglobin (Δ[HbO2]) and decreased deoxygenated hemoglobin (Δ[Hb]) in both cerebral hemispheres.
  • Cerebral oxygenation improved, indicated by a significant increase in differential hemoglobin concentration (Δ[HbD]).
  • Effects were dose-dependent over the 10-minute stimulation and persisted for 6 minutes post-stimulation.

Conclusions:

  • Near-infrared laser stimulation applied to the forehead can effectively and non-invasively improve cerebral oxygenation in healthy individuals.
  • TLS represents a promising non-invasive method for modulating brain hemodynamics and oxygenation.
