Abnormal Proliferation02:23

Abnormal Proliferation

5.4K
Under normal conditions, most adult cells remain in a non-proliferative state unless stimulated by internal or external factors to replace lost cells. Abnormal cell proliferation is a condition in which the cell's growth exceeds and is uncoordinated with normal cells. In such situations, cell division persists in the same excessive manner even after cessation of the stimuli, leading to persistent tumors. The tumor arises from the damaged cells that replicate to pass the damage to the...

Summary

Serum miR-21 is elevated in diffuse large B cell lymphoma (DLBCL) and indicates a poorer prognosis. This microRNA shows potential as a novel biomarker for predicting DLBCL patient survival outcomes.

Area of Science:

  • Oncology
  • Molecular Biology
  • Biomarker Discovery

Background:

  • MicroRNAs (miRNAs) in serum are recognized as potential biomarkers for diverse diseases.
  • Investigating serum miR-21 expression in diffuse large B cell lymphoma (DLBCL) is crucial for understanding its role.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine the expression level of miR-21 in DLBCL patients.
  • To evaluate the prognostic value of serum miR-21 in DLBCL.

Main Methods:

  • Serum samples from 112 DLBCL patients and 45 healthy controls were analyzed using quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR).
  • Statistical analyses included chi-square, Kaplan-Meier, and Cox regression to assess associations with clinicopathologic parameters and survival.

Main Results:

  • Serum miR-21 was significantly upregulated in DLBCL patients compared to controls.
  • Higher miR-21 expression correlated with B symptoms, IPI score, and specific treatments (P<0.05).
  • Elevated miR-21 was linked to worse overall survival and identified as an independent prognostic marker (P=0.001, HR: 4.404).

Conclusions:

  • Serum miR-21 expression is a potential novel biomarker for predicting DLBCL prognosis.
  • miR-21 warrants further investigation as a diagnostic and prognostic tool in DLBCL.
