Intervertebral space calcifications (I.S.C.) in children often indicate underlying spinal disease. Early management is crucial to prevent severe vertebral deformities associated with this condition.

Area of Science:

  • Pediatric Radiology
  • Spinal Disorders
  • Skeletal Dysplasias

Background:

  • Intervertebral space calcifications (I.S.C.) are observed in pediatric patients.
  • These calcifications can be associated with pain and radiographic fragmentation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the clinical and radiographic features of intervertebral space calcifications in children.
  • To understand the relationship between I.S.C. and spinal growth disorders.
  • To determine the long-term implications of I.S.C. on vertebral development.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective study of 31 intervertebral space calcifications in 21 children.
  • Clinical follow-up for pain and symptom resolution.
  • Radiographic assessment of calcifications and associated spinal abnormalities.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Average follow-up duration of 71.5 months for 25 calcifications.
  • Main Results:

    • Pain (Crisis) was the primary symptom, resolving in 70% within one month.
    • Radiographic fragmentation and symptom resolution were criteria for calcification resolution, occurring between 28 days and 6 months.
    • I.S.C. indicated general spinal disease affecting vertebral bodies, growth plates, and discs.
    • Fifteen lesions related to growth disorders were noted in 16 cervical I.S.C.
    • Four cases of dorsal intrasomatic cavitation containing calcified material were observed.
    • Growth disturbances were evident on initial radiographs or appeared later, post-I.S.C. resolution.
    • Absence of listel and lesions of multiple growth plates distant from the calcification were found.

    Conclusions:

    • Intervertebral space calcifications are indicative of vertebral osteochondrosis, a condition with potentially more concerning residual deformities than the calcification itself.
    • Early diagnosis and management of I.S.C. are essential to mitigate significant vertebral body deformities.
    • The study highlights the importance of recognizing I.S.C. as a marker for broader spinal growth disturbances in children.
