Area of Science:
- Organic Chemistry
- Natural Product Synthesis
Background:
- Nearly 5000 halogenated natural products have been identified.
- Approximately 50% of these compounds feature a halogen attached to an sp(3)-hybridized carbon atom.
- Stereocontrolled halogenation is crucial for synthesizing many complex halogenated natural products.
Purpose of the Study:
- To critically review methods and strategies for stereoselective halogenation in natural product synthesis.
- To identify gaps in current synthetic technologies for halogenated natural products.
- To highlight existing methods not yet applied to complex molecule synthesis.
Main Methods:
- Literature review of stereoselective halogenation techniques.
- Analysis of successful natural product syntheses involving halogenation.
- Identification of underutilized synthetic methodologies.
Main Results:
- Discussion of various methods for stereoselective halogen introduction.
- Highlighting the importance of stereocontrol in synthesizing halogenated natural products.
- Identification of areas where synthetic strategies can be advanced.
Conclusions:
- Natural products inspire critical advances in chemical synthesis, particularly in halogenation.
- Further development in stereoselective halogenation is needed for efficient natural product synthesis.
- Existing chemical methods offer potential for novel applications in complex molecule synthesis.
