Abstract:
Methods of measuring the blood pressure by means of cuffs using pressure which changes slowly with respect to intravascular pressure were described in a review. After a short note on methods of deriving the mean pressure from the pulse wave velocity, the principle of unloaded vascular wall and the Penaz technique using this principle was presented in some detail. The method which seems to be of practical relevance, has been elaborated for clinical use in the last years.

Monitoring Both Arms:
Monitoring BP in both arms during the initial assessment is advisable, as the systolic value may differ by five to ten mm Hg between arms. For subsequent BP assessments, use the arm with the higher reading.
